The recommendation is the culmination of work by an Odette project team comprising BMW, Daimler, Bosch, Hella, ZF and Covisint supported by PingIdentity, Siemens, and Microsoft. The idea of Federated Identity Management is to enable Single-Sign-On (SSO) functionality across different security infrastructures in a standardised way. It is an enabling technology for addressing the demands of new business models (e.g. virtual companies, joint development programs, co-operation between companies etc.)

Essentially, the RFID-specific functionalities and the necessary common data are covered. The recommendation concentrates on the automatic identification of parts and assemblies in all their forms in the automotive world. However, many aspects are easily transferable to other areas, such as vehicle distribution or logistic processes.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is playing an ever more important role in the automotive sector and, for some processes, radio-based identification is already superior to other identification procedures, such as bar-coding, in terms of process efficiency and quality criteria.
RFID technology has been applied for many years in the industry, primarily in closed loop systems, which serve exclusively for the development of internal company processes but the full potential of RFID in the management of Containers or, to be more exact, Returnable Transport Items (RTIs) is only realized when the different elements of the supply chain use the same standards and technologies and information is processed at every stage in an open loop system.

Volvo expects the use of OFTP2 to reduce cost and increase performance, especially for the transmission of CAD files
Volvo IT will discontinue support for X.25 by the end of June 2010 and for ISDN by the end of December 2010.
