Global Despatch Advice

In May 2003 Odette issued a new electronic version of the Despatch Advice document. This new message, called Global DESADV Version 1, is used in parallel with the existing AVIEXP/DESADV Version 5R1. It was developed by Odette in collaboration with their American and Japanese automotive counterpart organisations – AIAG & JAMA/JAPIA.

This new message covers all the functionalities existing in the previous message, and was enhanced by the addition of important new features. These can be divided in two parts:

1) Functionalities linked with the American and Japanese business practices such as:

- Freight cost management;
- Mapping between inner and outer package by a parent-child relationship;
- Shikyu process – specific relationship between Customers and Tier1 and Tier2 Suppliers.

2) Functionalities linked with packaging structure and packaging identification practices such as:

- The possibility to describe several intermediate packaging levels (e.g., Intermediate Outer package);
- The capability to describe packaging components (e.g. lids, inserts…)
- A package driven version of the message: the package structure now may drive the message and the same article part number may appear as subordinate information under several package lines;
- The packaging hierarchy can be described top-down, although the message is still article-driven (Outer package contains intermediate outer packages, intermediate outer packages contain inner boxes, etc...);
- Non-identified inner packages (without bar-code label) can be used.

The Global DESADV message has many benefits. For instance:

- By regrouping European, American and Japanese business practices within a single message it allows Odette members to fulfil the new logistics requirements of an increasingly dynamic international market.
- By allowing the management of multiple packaging levels and packaging components, the message fits well with the new rules of packaging management in the automotive industry.

As proof of success in Europe, the Volkswagen Group and Volvo Truck have already announced their intention to implement the Global DESADV message.
